After our decision to stop touring with horses in 2000, we reverted to the conventional way of travelling between performances – using vans. This wasn’t new, as the company had been touring using motor vehicles this way outside of the summer months for several years.

From ‘Company of Angels’
At this point I was joined by Alison Duddle, who had recently moved from the USA, where she had worked with ‘In The Heart of the Beast Mask & Puppet Theatre’. Alison was experienced and quickly shared many of the roles that I had, until then, undertaken on my own. Gradually the direction of her work moved towards creating theatre for children and young people, but her directing and making abilities were very welcome to me. We had worked closely on ‘The Girl Who Cut Flowers’, but the first show we co-directed was ‘Company Of Angels’, which told the story of the young Jewish artist, Charlotte Salomon, who died in Auschwitz in 1944.

In 1996 I had met the Nigerian playwright, academic and author, Sam Ukala, and we had worked together to create a remarkable co-production, ‘Harvest Of Ghosts’.

Between 2000 and 2018, when I left the company, Alison and I created many touring productions. Two of these that I was central to writing, designing, making and directing were ‘Veil’ and ‘Angus – Weaver of Grass’.
